Philadelphia – Senior Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored 24 points and had a career-high 14 rebounds and four blocks as Drexel defeated Navy, 86-70, in the first round of the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
For the second straight game, the Dragons got off to a quick start to take control of the contest. The Dragons went on a 12-2 run midway through the first half to take an 18-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining. That lead extended to 20 points at the half when Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) hit a jumper with 22 seconds left in the half to send the Dragons to the locker room with a 49-29 lead.
The pesky Midshipmen played well in the second half and chipped away at the Drexel lead. Kaleo Kina scored on a layup with 3:36 to play to get the Midshipmen within eight points, but the Dragons answered with a 5-0 run to seal the victory.
Elegar was 6-for-9 from the floor and sank 12 of his 15 free throw attempts. It was his second straight double-double and the ninth of his career. Hawthorne added 19 points and had four steals. Freshman Gerald Colds (New York, N.Y./St. Raymond's) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Evan Neisler (Raleigh, N.C./Boston College) came off the bench to score eight points and pick up eight rebounds. Chris Harris led four Midshipmen in double figures with 16 points. Drexel shot just under 51 percent from the floor, while Navy shot just 37 percent. Navy did make nine three pointers, including six in the second half, as they tried to chip away at the Drexel lead, that got to as high as 23 points..
Drexel will play its next five games away from the Daskalakis Athletic Center, starting on Wednesday night. The Dragons will play at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. It will be the first home game as a member of Division I for the Eagles.
